History:
It was a cold winter's day when Shaya was born to the Arandar family in Saldea. Her mother went through hours and hours of painful labour but finally lost the battle, leaving Shaya motherless before her eyes had even seen the light.
Her father hated her for it and had little use for a daughter. The first years of her life she spend with her father's sisters who gave her more beatings then food and Shaya quickly learned to make herself invisible and avoid punishment by lying and cheating whenever she could.
Mostly left to her own devices when she was not the subject of her aunts' cruel intentions, she locked herself away in the library of the house and eagerly devoured every book within sight. Through books she could escape into a better world and as tales of monsters and adventure took form before her eyes, a passion for travelling was instilled in Shaya. When she build up enough courage, she simply ran away from home with the romantic notion of becoming an adventurer, like the hunters for the Horn in the tales from the old legends. Shaya soon found out that the world is a tough place for a 7-year old on her own and before long she was sleeping under bushes and stealing what little food she could get her hands on. She made her way from town to town, never staying long enough to get into more trouble than she could handle. Things changed when she bumped into Caius Droven.
The market was filled with people that day and Shaya found it easy to make herself dissappear in the crowd. She secretively scanned the people around her from under her lashes, most of which stepped around the filthy little girl with a look of disgust.
Shaya did her best to look as innocent and harmless as she could, while she tried to ignore the rumbling in her stomach. Her eyes suddenly caught a glint and she was just in time to see a well dressed man cross the square not too far away. The glint turned out to be a reflection in his golden pocket watch and Shaya's eyes went big. Acting on impulse, she followed the man from a distance until he stopped to admire the handiwork of the local smith. Shaya did not waste any time, running round the corner at full speed, she purposely bumped into the man, while her fingers worked at lightning speed. She almost grinned in triumph when she chain came loose in her grip easily while she was still bowing and scraping her apologies and giving him a look that said "please don't beat me again." The man brushed off his clothes with the mere raising of one eyebrow and Shaya made herself scarce as fast as she could. Ducking into the first alley she came across, she took out the watch and admired the way the light reflected on the casing in a dull warm glow.
"That's quite a piece of work you pulled there." Shaya spun round at the sound of that voice behind her, her heart leaping up in her throat. It seemed the owner of the watch had not been so unsuspecting as she had had thought, for there he stood, looking at her with vague smile playing around his lips. Shaya's eyes darted round, looking for an escape, but she had unknowingly trapped herself as there was only one way out of this alley and he was blocking it. Slowly backing off till she found herself with her back against the wall, Shaya considered her options. Maybe she could somehow get passed him if she distracted him. Her
persuer slowly advanced on her through the alley, the smile never leaving his lips.
Swallowing slowly she held out the watch to him, realising that the game was up. Perhaps he would let her go if she returned his property, but then she very much doubted it. The tall dark stranger reached out and took the watch from her hands and Shaya made a desperate leap towards the freedom lurking behind him. He caught her easily, and held her even more casually as if he had been expecting her to do just that. Shaya fought him with everything she had in her, sinking her teeth into the hand that held her arm in a painfully crushing grip.
He did not even flinch. Instead he slapped her across the mouth with a blow that send her to the floor.
"I'll have no more of that from you, do I make myself clear?" Shaya could taste blood on her lips and she hung her head in defeat as she nodded slowly.
"I have been watching you for a couple of days now, you show promise girl and I could use someone who looks innocent enough to pull off a few things I have in mind." Shaya blinked and looked up at him in disbelief. She shot him a look of distrust, she found it hard to believe that someone who looked so well off would have any interest in her, except to give her another beating or have her send to some orphanage.
Shaya soon found out that Caius, as he introduced himself, was very serious. It also turned out that Caius happened to be a very succesful "businessman" as he liked to call himself.
Shaya was a quick learner and she eagerly learned all the tricks of the profession, outshining even her master in some of them.
By the time she was 17, Shaya was the perfect cat burglar. Caius made her do hour long exercises to keep her as agile and nimble as possible and she could climb a tree or walk a highrope as well as any acrobat in any circus.
As she matured it soon became apparant Shaya had inherited her mother's beauty. Never missing an oppertunity, Caies soon had her use her charmes on men to get even more of what he wanted.
Under his guidance, she was dressed and introduced into the high circles he liked to move in. Men would often let down their guard in the presence of this beautiful creature, not knowing she could outplay, outdrink and outsmart most of them in her sleep. Pretty soon she had all the perfect manners down that would befit a lady of high standing and no one would recognise the filthy street rat in the beautiful young woman that held herself with a grace as if she was born in a palace.
Shaya had a weakness for jewelry, it somehow represented everything that was beautiful that she had never posessed and she liked to surround herself with precious and semi-precious gems. While attending one of the formal dinners Caies had send her to, her eyes caught a beautifully crafted silver necklace with a single blue sapphire around the neck of a woman that she could not pin an age on. From the moment she set eyes on the necklace, Shaya knew she simply had to have it and her eyes followed the woman as she moved across the room to talk to people. The woman held herself with a calm selfassuredness that appealed to Shaya and the people she spoke to seemed to treat her with the utmost respect. Making sure no one spotted her interest in the woman and the necklace, Shaya waited till she excused herself for the evening and then quietly snuck out after her. She would wait till the woman was asleep and simply take the necklace for herself. Her eyes sparkled as she patiently waited for the sounds from within the woman's chamber to settle down. Waiting till she was sure the woman was asleep, Shaya snuck into the room and felt her way across in the darkness, making sure not to make a sound. She grinned as her fingers found what had to be a jewelry box on the dresser but as she started to open it, all the lights in the room suddenly came full ablaze, as if someone had lit them all at once.
With a terrified yelp, Shaya jumped for the door, but it slammed shut by an unseen force and Shaya could only pull on it helplessly.
Shaya turned and faced the woman she had tried to rob. She noticed the woman had not even undressed and was sitting on the bed calmly, regarding her with interest and curiosity.
The woman introduced herself as Dornala Asmidean, Aes Sedai of the Blue Ajah and Shaya nearly fainted on the spot. She had heard and read about Aes Sedai and she knew that being captured by one could not be a good thing.
In the next few moments of conversation however, she was faced with a choice. Dornala calmly explained that she had, what was called "the spark" and that she had no choice but to accompany her to the Tower to learn to control the ability she would eventually develop. Shaya could not believe her ears and this "Tower" was just about the last place on earth she wanted to go. Dornale must have seen her jaw set in stubborn defiance for the next moment she said: "Mark me child, if you do not go to the Tower, I shall see you dead myself and by the oaths know that I speak the truth."
Shaya did not need to hear those last words to know the woman spoke true, the iron in her eyes was reflected in her voice and Shaya knew she was once again defeated.........
